Play is a handy command and very useful than having to use a loop through the whole text file. Since it has a -r switch, it should be taken advantage of. Play is "messy" to you might be 'cause you hardly use it. There is nothin' messy 'bout it.

.play -r $chan 8ball.txt 2000

V.S. 

.timer 1 2 msg $chan $read(8ball.txt)

They practically do the same thing. If fact, the play is shorter and more efficient than using $read() with a timer in this case.

Play seems a little messy to me :s (but thats just me being picky)

No timer is necessary if you use the /play command with the -r switch in conjunction with a text file.

.play -r $chan 8ball.txt 2000

The -r switch tells the play command to play a line randomly. 2000 equals to 2 seconds. Then place all the messages with the control codes in the file.

if i was you i still would use a .txt file.

on 1:TEXT:!8Ball:#:{
describe $chan mevr.fortuin is de 8ball even aan het shaken...
timer 1 2 msg $chan 9,48Ball zegt9,1 : 12,15 $read(8ball.txt)
}

or $read(bla bla) where ever you write the file, then you dont have so much lines in your mIRC remote.
