It’s been a while since I came up with another frame. My last freestyle frame Hex was good to me, but I’ve been dabbing with struts too much, and wanted something more traditional, a design that focus on refinement rather than anything groundbreaking (in all honesty there isn’t anything groundbreaking worthy design in the realm of 5-inch freestyle frames these days).

Entering Firefly. The main objective for this frame is the balance of: simplicity, prop compatibility, ease of maintenance, efficient use of space, and DIY fun.

With the minimum four-standoff configuration, Firefly maintains rigidity with a strong core: a bottom plate, wide spine, 2.5mm mid plate with minimum cutouts, and a stack plate that provides an extra layer of torsional rigidity. The front camera cage also provides lightweight stiffness to the overall structure (nothing new here.)

I’ve always considered props being the most fun part of a freestyle quad. Whether it’s the nimbleness of 4.8, balance of 5.1, cruising speed of 5.2/5.5, Firefly can do them all, in a 127g package.

I took a page from HaloRC Archon’s GoPro mount, remove four screws, the top plate can be lifted like a car hood. The stack plate allows pilots to swap out a mid plate without tearing the stack apart, or swap out a stack without lifting the top plate.

Some may dislike the comparatively small space for electronics, but I don’t see a point for a lot of shenanigan parts in a freestyle rig, and made the space just enough for all the common stacks and a vtx. The shortened body really helps the overall durability and centralize the mass.

Finally, the frame comes with a titanium chin plate and boasts a titanium bottom plate upgrade option, all can be anodized colors and no two firefly can be the same.

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
