I frequently dont have time to fly during the day so I needed to find a solution whereI can safely fly when it is dark outside or inside the house. Thus was born the Night Rider quad.

I was able to buy the UZ85 kit from banggood for a little over $80 on a flash sale, and I had some various parts aying around my bench so I thought I would look into removing the IR [infrared] filter on a used but still working Runcam nano 2 and look for some small IR LEDS. I came across Project: Night Vision by @the.ronin and while this was a good starting point the design was too chunky for me as my goal was to build a light weight system that would fit on a whoop frame and run with 1s lipos. So I continued my search and found some small IR lights on ebay. I was able to purchace the lot very cheap which helped keep my over all cost down.

How to remove a IR filter:

Problems I encountered and the solutions:

  • The 10,000kv motors that came stock on the UZ85 are a underpowered for 1s lipo. The solution was to swap these out for 19,000kv motors I got off of an Eachine Cinefun.
  • The IR LEDS will burn out if powered straight from vbat even on 1s. My solution thus far was to use a 1.5ohm 1watt resistor. I used the calculator at to find the right resistor value.

That is pretty dang cool! I've strapped a bright led headlight on a quad before and it was OK but the IR lights are interesting. Super stealthy. Might have to give this a try.

You could use some reflective tape to make a race track (maybe using the trees). You can see how bright they would be in the reflective bits in the cars, on the video you linked.

That is a great idea. I will work on that.

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
