Ethix CineRat 3" 6S DJI + GoPro

This is my first drone build. I ordered a GepRC Rocket Lite to start with after a learning the bare minimum in Liftoff. A friend shipped this frame to me from the States (I live in Shanghai, China) and due to Covid-related factory slowdowns it arrived not long after the Rocket Lite actually arrived. Because of this, I haven't had much actual flying time, so the flight footage is nothing remotely impressive.

With my wobbly, just-trying-to-stay-in-the-sky flying, I get about 7+ minutes without a GoPro and 5+ with the GoPro on a Tattu 6S 1050mAh 95C battery.

I have the TBS USB-C power cable to power the GoPro from a 5V output on the flight controller but didn't actually get it working yet. Haven't figured out why... So that should shave some weight from not needing the GoPro battery. Hopefully that can keep the flight time around 5 minutes as my flying progresses.

With the printed guards on, the propellers were scraping a bit against the guards. I did a couple flights to see if it would chip enough away from the guards, but the motors were getting hot. I'm waiting on some different props to try, but in the mean time I have taken the guards off and it flies great with lots of power. Again, I only have the GepRC Rocket Lite to compare it to.

Below is some flight footage from a GoPro run in my neighborhood. Turn on CC to see the DJI OSD info. I haven't changed any PIDs from default Betaflight 4.1 yet, but I did turn on Bidirectional D-Shot and the new dynamic filtering. I'm sure there are plenty of improvements that can be had by tuning the PIDs, but I'm just so new to flying that I wouldn't even know yet what is my fault and what can be tuned out. Regardless, I'm having so much fun...

Weights (without prop guards):

  • Base - 250g
  • With Battery - 422g
  • With Battery & GoPro - 561g (Includes GoPro battery, mounting screw, and ND Filter plus lens clip for GoPro 8)

Hi mate, could I know what are you filtering and pids?
I just finished building it and I just did a test fly for like 20 seconds and the motors are burning hot.

Im using 6s 1300mha( I know its super heavy) but should be fine as would be even heavier with a gopro 8 and 6s 850mha, and I have seen on YouTube people flying 1050 6s with gopro 8.

Hi, I built a similar CineRat, but I'm getting motor desync when I pump throttle to full very quickly, I think it might be a configuration issue, because it does the same with 3 different ESC and 2 FC, I just tried to change on the ESC side the Motor Timing to Auto and the Demag Compensation to High and smoked a motor. Can you share your PIDs and your ESC settings? Thanks in advance!

I wish I would have read this before I bought the frame. I had the Cadxx Vista specifically in mind. Sounds like it's gonna be a challenge!!

Do you know what size hex the m2 hardware uses? just got mine and it's not a 1.5mm like i thought it would be.

Thanks for the info. I finally got mine finished. I just added washers to the bolts until i get my motor plates. i even ordered a second frame thinking it was just a mistake and the second frame didn't have them either so now tbs has sent me two sets. One retailer told me they come with the 3d print kit which makes zero sense. I ended up using my own hardware as well but need to order more 12mm bolts for when my motor plates arrive... who knows when that will be. coming from china.

Luckily I'm in China at the moment, so I'm sort of getting these things as the factories open up, but I'm still left feeling less and less enamored with this frame. It's... okay... but I still haven't found a set of props that work with the prop guards without smacking into them. It kinda defeats the purpose. It's nice that it has room to mount a 30x30 stack plus a Caddx Vista, sure. But with that I need a new antenna solution. Plus, there's not a truly reliable way to secure the camera angle with only one screw. Plus I can't even use the prop guards (due to prop size OR the lack of carbon plates for them. I've had screws go through them and don't have washers that work for me...). Plus the GoPro mount is so far back that the DJI antenna is covered by the battery (1050mAh 6S). Maybe it's better for non DJI folks, but it's too many consessions at this point.

i know what ya mean! i ended up toilet tanking my battery cause i couldnt fit a 1000mah 4s. been using the gemfan 3052 and only one rubs ever so slightly so i heated it up and stretched it so now it doesnt rub. and its annoying that they shipped these out without motor plates. i bet it would be a lot tougher to fit everything if i was using the dji stuff

Could the Vista fit in the front?
I'd like to use a 30x30 stack

revnelson   Apr 09, 2020

Yes, it can. I think you would need to use a different antenna, or an extension piece, or get creative with where you mount the antenna if it's in front. I'm planning to build a 30x30 stack with the Vista into my spare frame kit. Hopefully I can get pictures up next week.

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
