UPDATE 1/4/2020
After landing from waist height and breaking ANOTHER arm TOTAL OF FIVE BROKEN ARMS SINCE I BUILT THIS QUAD , I have decided to retire this frame and move the electronics to a new frame. The CMW SlamNasty frame has great potential, but its durability leaves A LOT to be desired. Fortunately this quad never hit a race gate, I fear if it did the motors might finish the race; the ESC and FC might wind up scattered across the field; the frame might end up in orbit; and the poor battery would likely have exploded in a magnificent (but tragic) puff of smoke.

Sorry CMW, but I cannot recommend the SlamNasty frame to anyone in good faith.

CMW package showed up. To remove the stripped screw I had to remove the entire front of the frame and spin the camera mounting plate (annoying but I got the job done). The new arm and screw went right in with no issues. I redid my front motor mounting (reran the wires). Tossed a new set of props on it and... OFF TO THE RACES! This is a force to be reckoned with - racing, or freestyle (in a pinch)

CMW Support is has responded and is helping me with the issue. They believe it is possible that it was just a bad arm (it happens to everyone!) and they're helping me out with that. Although no matter what I do the screw that stripped out is not coming out... I may need to order a new baseplate in order to fix this - for a $50 frame from a reputable company, this is giving me a massive headache.

The maiden flight went well, this thing screams.

I landed in a pile of grass clippings and the front right arm snapped. I intentionally touched down in a soft spot to protect my battery and I heard a snap. This was a low speed landing - nothing like crashing into a gate. When I started to remove the screws holding the arm, one stripped out. I was not hulking out on this thing - it just stripped out like nobody's business. I am EXTREMELY disappointed in the strength of this frame given these events. I contacted CMW support and have yet to hear back. Stay tuned...

I got the Synergy Whitenoise FC in the July Drone Drop... I also had my eye on the CMW Slam Nasty frame. I wanted to see if I would be able to build my second dedicated racer using both. I was going to keep with tradition and go with BrotherHobby Speedshields, but the day I was ordering the Vanover motors were released - I changed things up a bit.

Here's what I settled on:

  1. CMW Super SlamNasty Frame (w/ Flipstick and front arm brace)
  2. Vanover Motors (w/ racewire LEDs)
  3. Runcam Racer 2
  4. Synergy Whitenoise FC
  5. Spedix GS45 4in1
  6. TBS Unifiy nano (w/ Lumenier Axii 2)
  7. FrSky r9mm

A few notes I think are most relevant to this build:

  • This frame is INSANELY tight (not sure what I expected from the Super Slam Nasty)
  • Screws have a tendency to strip... just putting it in the first time was touchy. I don't know that it will be easy to remove.
NaNundefinedTo set up the r9mm with f.port firmware: Bridge the pads on the underside of the FC to select no inversion. Solder the Inv s.Port pad to the TX1 pad. Follow Oscar Liang's tutorial to setup uninverted f.port receivers.
NaNundefinedThere is almost no room to fit the LED racewire... It's possible in the rear, but not in the front.

Finally, I put this on the scales to get an idea how heavy this build is. It comes in at 267.8g without props. I almost built a racer at (dry) toy weight!

awesome build. did yoy get camera control to work with the runcam racer and the synergy f4 ?

Mayan_Hawk   Jan 29, 2020

Yes i was, in order to get the cam working i had to short the Tx and Rx pins on the cam when i powered the quad. doing this switches it over from joystick control to uart control. if you look up the Nurk build vodeo he shows it better than i describe it.

Hwell does that flip-stick work?

Mayan_Hawk   Sep 10, 2019

Suprisingly well!

I haven't had the chance to race it yet (the MultiGP chapter near my college is dead), but just tearing through spontaneous courses it does its job. It caught on a tree branch and messed with my line - but even though I was at full speed, the flip-stick was unharmed.

My only complaint is that the frame doesnt fit inside my bag/on my bag well with it on (i just remove a couple screws when needed).

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
