I started this little project as i wanted to practice my CAD skills and because I’m a tribal pilot that keeps crashing.
My design brief was to make a quad that in the event of a crash the battery would remain undamaged, as seemingly every other time I go out I get a new dent in a battery. Second was to protect the motor wires from prop strike.
To get around the prob strike and to make the arm more aerodynamic I encased the wires in a carbon tube on top of a 10mm thick piece of carbon that I shaped into an (aeroish) teardrop profile.
The next thing was to protect the camera and battery. I did think about making the sides out of carbon, but as this is only the prototype and for ease of manufacture I went with aluminium.
The battery/camera and electronics are all mounted on a 3d printed deck. Initially I thought this would make it easy to solder all together but as the motors mount on the carbon arms and they mount off the ally cage it ended up being very fiddley and time consuming.
I’ll update this post as the design evolves and I get to the fun part of crash testing haha.

So after going through 5 packs I was getting a little board of just flying round my local spot, so I thought id see how fast it could go. Reflecting on this now I should have probably practiced on the sim first but meh what’s the worst that could happen.
So I set the camera angle at 60deg and went for a blast round. I quickly found out that the controls feel completely different, but any how I persevered. After blasting to one end of the field I thought I’d sussed it. But on the return, I ran out of talent. And then, the worst happened. This is what going full pace into the ground with a prototype frame looks like.
Looking at the damage to the carbon arms, it turns out I shouldn’t have used Kensert’s as the fixing into the carbon as there wasn’t enough surface area engagement and there not designed for that kind of loading in carbon. So now I have made new arms with captive nuts so the carbon is being compressed instead of relying on such a small surface area of thread.
But on the bright side the battery and motor arms don’t have a scratch on them haha.

when you prototype, you wil have to go through this many times hahaha. Hope future versions hold up better :-)

How heavy is the AUW of the quad.

Quite heavy. The weight of the frame is 206g and all up with the battery it came to 637g

That is heavy without a GoPro. But a really innovative design.

I’m a sheet metal fabricator by trade so I just printed a flat pattern off cad then shaped and folded it.

i really love the design id for sure buy this frame as long as its under 80-60 dollars but the one thing i do see is that the bottom portion seems to lack a sort of renforcement if i were you id desing like a X-brace to reinforce the bottom side of the frame where the arms are located,and also in my opinion i would design some sort of teardrop design that fades of were the motors mount to really perfect in the frame and make it as strong as possible but other than that i love the way it looks
