Similar to the Compaq Ipaq when the power is off the unit draws power from the battery. What this means is that the unit from full charge will drain the battery in approximately 72 hours. The TomTom home software allows you to easily backup the favorites and other information from the unit to the computer which can be restored and anytime from the computer. Note that the first backup will take considerable amount of time for me on a Dual AMD core machine it took approximately 45 minutes. The maps are amazingly accurate and show you when and where to turn. The text to speech option however sometimes gets confused between telling you to run right or left when the map and actual road shows otherwise. The unit allows you to use human voice for the speech and even download voices from the TomTom site or use one of your own. The issue with the human voice is that it does not speak street name or addresses only basic information like turn left, turn right, take the freeway etc. Only the computer voice on the unit can do all the functions of the Text to Speech. There are other nice features with this unit such as weather warnings and traffic updates but they can not be used unless you have a blue-tooth enabled phone. As I do not have a blue-tooth enable phone I do not know if the blue-tooth enable phone also has to be internet ready or if the TomTom XL-S uses the phone like a modem to some central TomTom server. At any rate if these features are used I expect that air-time on the phone will be used so be mindful. Overall the large touch screen, features and ease of use make a great first timers GPS navigation system.
