I'm trying to figure out what to do with this site. The spam is really a huge problem. I'd love to change things around, but I don't know what I could do to make it successful. I don't think just another code snippet sharing platform has much of a place online, so I need to completely reimagine this site. Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions?

I made some adjustments to how comments and snippets are posted. The goal is to eliminate spam. It seems a number of spambots are programmed to post here and it's become quite a task to keep up with it. Hopefully these changes can drastically reduce, and hopefully eliminate, the amount of spam being posted to the site.

I just upgraded the server, so it should be a bit faster. Let me know if you encounter any problems. Thank you!

I've gone ahead and switched everything back to the "Snippet" terminology. My goal with the "Page" concept was that people could write articles, but since that never caught on I think "Snippet" is more appropriate. I've also gone ahead and removed the "Projects" section from the main menu as well. This was the old Scripts section which is now deprecated. The scripts are still there, but since the layout is broken it needs to be hidden.

I've also reworked the menu system and simplified the site dramatically. Clicking home when you're logged in now goes to the latest snippets. The activity stream has been delegated to the "Following" menu item under your avatar. There are now only 3 primary sections to the site: Popular Snippets, Threads and Latest Snippets.

I know this has been a long time coming, but I finally finished implementing the new statistics system. You can now see the pageviews from both the page listing and the pages themselves. When you click the icon you'll get a dialog bar chart outlining the pageviews for the past two months.

Howdy folks! I know it's been a little while since I've updated here, but I feel I need to let this layout settle for a while before making any radical changes again. I have been working on the core engine and have some nice features to bring over to Hawkee in the near future. I started a new site using the Hawkee engine called RotorBuilds which has had me fine tuning some core functions of the software. It still looks a great deal like Hawkee, but I'm not focusing on design so much as functionality. Have a look and let me know what you think!

I made a slight tweak to the Noteworthy tab. I changed the criteria to look at the user's points. So if you've earned enough points your pages will show up there. New users who do not have any points will not show up there.

Has anybody started using Google Inbox yet? I really like the design and UX. I haven't opened Gmail for a couple days and I don't miss it yet.

I'm experimenting with TinkerCad and it seems to be quite powerful. Our local library has a 3D printer that's available to the public, so I've started to get into printing basic things. Anybody else have access to a 3D printer?

I decided to get into a new hobby and picked up a Cheerson CX-20. It's a neat quadcopter and allows for programmable waypoint missions and an abundance of tweaks. Anybody own a quadcopter?

I just made a minor change to the site. Now when threads are too tall they will be collapsed and include a "More" button to expand them. I think this will help make the activity stream easier to view at a glance.

I've been considering what to do about the Projects/Scripts section and I believe the best course of action is to convert them to the new page format. Files currently hosted on Hawkee will be grandfathered in with no future support for file storage. Sites like GitHub are better suited for hosting. This will allow me to permanently shut that section down and reduce the need to keep those themes and styles up to date. Let me know if you have any thoughts of concerns on this matter.

I've been considering how to structure our permission system. My goal is to encourage well thought out posts while limiting spammy activity. For one I want to limit voting so as to avoid point manipulation. I'm considering requiring a certain point total in order to unlock voting in the first place. Then after that I may limit each individual to X number of votes depending on their level. For example: 1 vote per day with more than 15 points, 3 votes per day with more than 100 points, etc. I'm also considering restricting new threads. I may limit new users to one thread per day with incremental unlocking as well. What are your thoughts?

Looks like the redesign got us on to Product Hunt today. We're getting quite an influx of traffic as a result.

Hawkee   -  Dec 06, 2014

Welcome to the newly redesigned Hawkee.com! We've made extensive changes to the design in order to make it more readable and modern. There may be bugs, so please report anything you find. Here's a brief changelog:

  • New logo!
  • New font for headings: Bree Serif
  • New navbar with left and right off-canvas menus.
  • New posting mechanism.
  • More whitespace and larger fonts.
  • Page liking now happens at the bottom of pages.
  • Modal dialogs use new grow and fade animations.
  • Centered text in page titles.
  • No more footer (links are now in left off-canvas menu)
  • Simplified registraton/login system.
  • New Google noCAPTCHA with hopefully fewer spam accounts.
  • Almost every page has been tweaked in one way or another.

Has anybody tried polymer before? I found it while I was looking into Google's "Material Design". It looks like a very interesting application design framework.

I've completely redone the navigation system replacing most of it with offcanvas menus. I decided to go with a sliding animation to make it appear like the menus are being uncovered by the site. I've also decided to go with centered headings, even larger fonts and more whitespace.

So when I was considering the terminology for "Pages" the idea to use "Stories" crossed my mind, but I nixed it because it doesn't necessarily imply something instructional. I'm starting to reconsider that. What do you think about using the term "Story" to represent a page?

I'm experimenting with a more minimalist header, centered page titles and larger H1s. What do you think?

While the contact form isn't the most exciting page, it does illustrate most of the new elements I've been working on. I just completed the footer and added a CSS bouncy effect to the social links.

I've been experimenting with off-canvas menus. I'll have two on the mobile version, but I'd like to use this one for the desktop version. I kinda like the way it adds dimension to the site. You can't see it in the images, but it pushes the site to the side as it slides in.
